Tan cloth boards with brown print and illustration by Texas artist H. D. Bugbee, whose drawings are used throughout book. The story of the Texas Panhandle during those romantic years when grass was free, and the frontier was a single, boundless range of prairie and plain. It tells of the buffalo who first grazed the grasslands of the High Plains, of the Comanche who followed wherever the bison led, of the hunter who cleared the way for the longhorn, of the cowboy who became a king on horseback, and of the nester who plowed under the sod of his feudal domain. The author moved as a bride to the center of the historic old Spur Ranch which at that time was forty miles long and thirty miles long.
