This brilliant if not iconic masterpiece by Frank Reaugh shows the lone longhorn overlooking the vast canyon landscape of Western Texas demonstrating the oneness of animal with nature. Although born in Illinois, Frank Reaugh moved to a Texas ranch at age sixteen and later became known as the “Rembrandt of the Longhorns.” His paintings capture the mood and light of the Texas landscape at different times of day and during various seasons of the year by using a palette of soft colors and a painterly style. Although he briefly studied art in Paris, he had already developed his own style. Highly sought after to teach, he taught art and helped found the Dallas Art Society (later the Dallas Museum of Art). This painting was probably adapted from a pastel sketch most likely painted near Quitaque, Texas, in the Caprock Canyonlands State Park.
