On November 11, 1918, World War I ended. The consequences of four years of warfare in Europe echoed throughout the world, leaving few places untouched. Though it was far from the scenes of conflict, historian Gregory W. Ball recounts how Texas forever changed.
This history describes the ways the war affected Texans politically, socially, and economically. Also, Texas’s geographical position in the United States influenced how the war affected the state. This led to fears of invasion from across the Rio Grande and rising racial tensions.
The U.S. Army and federal government developed training grounds in response to the nation’s entry into World War I. Texas, once a heavily rural state outside the national mainstream, became more “American” than ever before.
